Watch: New Kala Jeremiah track condemns gender violence
Tanzanian rapper and activist Kala Jeremiah has teamed up with singer Aslay and released a new track, 'Nisamehe' (Forgive Me).
The song portrays the battle for a women's right to her body and soul, and for her right to live a life that is safe from gender-based violence.
The story of the video depicts a man who once lived an extravagant life but abused his partner: she first miscarriages and eventually dies. The song ends with the singer asking for forgiveness after coming face to face with poverty, and encourages everybody to look for the signs in an abusive relationship in order to potentially save a life.
According to the UN Women, an entity dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women, the rate of violence against women and girls in Tanzania is a shocking 40% - with a 17% rate of sexual violence.
Describing the song, Jeremiah said: “This song's message is for some men who are perpetrators. Violence can negatively affect women’s sexual, mental, physical and reproductive health,” he wrote on YouTube.
“Violence against women and girls has devastating cost and consequences to individuals and societies. Violence against women is real. End Violence against women now.”
