Watch Tiwa Savage perform at King Charles III’s coronation concert
Nigerian Afrobeats star Tiwa Savage performed at a concert that celebrated the coronation of British monarch King Charles III at Windsor Castle in Berkshire on 7 May.
The ceremony followed the passing of King Charles III’s mother, Queen Elizabeth II, in September last year and saw Charles III crowned alongside Queen Consort Camilla. The event was broadcast live on BBC One, BBC iPlayer, BBC Radio 2, and BBC Sounds.
Introduced as the “queen of Afrobeats”, Tiwa Savage performed a live rendition of ‘Keys to the Kingdom,’ taken off US pop icon Beyoncé’s 2019 collaborative album The Lion King: The Gift, and originally featuring fellow Nigerian singer Mr Eazi.
The concert also saw performances by other global stars including emerging Nigeria-born and Nottingham-based musician JERUB, Steve Winwood, DJ Pete Tong, Lang Lang, Paloma Faith, Olly Murs, Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, Andrea Bocelli, Sir Bryn Terfel, and Freya Ridings.
“Tiwa Savage is an exceptional artist with a unique blend of African and Western sounds,” a statement released ahead of the concert read.
On her part, the multiple award-winning musician, who has released three albums and two EPs, told the BBC that it was an honour to represent Africa and the Commonwealth at such a historic event, adding that she was looking forward to “joining the celebrations and bringing Afrobeats to Windsor Castle for the first time.”
