Zambia mourns top artist Dandy Krazy
Zambians are mourning the passing on of local artist Dandy Krazy who succumbed to injuries caused by an accident on New Year’s Eve.
Dandy Krazy, born Wesley Chibambo, died on 2 January. He was 47. The incident occurred while he was driving to Kapiri Mposhi in Zambia. His vehicle collided with a truck and another car, resulting in the deaths of three people at the scene. Dandy Krazy was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later passed on.
Politicians and local artists took to social media to convey their condolences following news of the artist’s passing.
“Our hearts go out to the family, fans and friends of Wesley Chibambo aka Dandy Krazy, and those affected by the tragic accident that sadly claimed four lives,” Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema wrote on social media. “Our dedicated doctors and nurses at #UTH [University Teaching Hospital] are doing all they can. Keeping the bereaved families in our prayers during this time.”
Local musician Yo Maps wrote: “Rest in peace my brother my fellow artist and my friend. Your charisma and talent will be missed by us all. A true legend has left us. Your music was more than just entertainment it was a source of inspiration to many of us. You have left a void that can never be filled. To the family, friends and fans may you find comfort during this painful time, Dandy crazy’s legacy shall forever live on in our hearts. Rest in power Bashi Toto, your light will never dim.”

Former attorney general Musa Mwenye wrote: “Dandy Crazy was an exceptional musical talent. Through his ‘Donchi Kubeba’ song, he showed us just how powerful music can be in changing the political landscape. His tragic death is a huge loss to the nation and to the music fraternity. My heartfelt condolences go to his family and the music fraternity as whole.”
Dandy Krazy was a renowned musician known for leveraging music as a powerful tool for social and political commentary. His iconic track, ‘Donchi Kubeba’ (meaning Don’t Tell Them), played a significant role in the Patriotic Front’s (PF) victory in the 2011 elections, marking the end of the Movement for Multiparty Democracy’s 20-year rule. The song addressed pressing issues such as wealth inequality and lack of opportunities in Zambia. In recognition of his contributions, former president the late Michael Sata awarded Dandy Krazy the prestigious Grand Commander of the Order of Freedom.
Dandy Krazy’s discography includes other notable hits like ‘Chintelelwe’ and collaborations on songs such as ‘Chipuba Chandi’ by Indi K and ‘Temperature’ by Uniq. His music not only entertained but also inspired and united Zambians, cementing his legacy as a giant in the Zambian music industry.
