SA: Master KG’s Jerusalema hits 50 million YouTube views
South African house musician Master KG’s music video for the hit ‘Jerusalema’ has reached more than 50 million views on YouTube.
The upbeat gospel-inspired track features South African vocalist Nomcebo Zikode and was first released in November last year, with the follow-up of its music video released in December.
It was also included in the musician’s sophomore album of the same name, which dropped in January. In June, the 24-year old collaborated with Nigerian Afrobeats singer Burna Boy on a remix of the track.
Since its release, ‘Jerusalema’ has been making waves internationally, including on Billboard's charts. It also went viral after it sparked a global dance craze called #JerusalemaChallenge, spawning videos from France, Spain, Italy, Jamaica and Canada.
Master KG shared the news on his Twitter account: “#Jerusalema Has Reached 50 Million Views!! Let's Celebrate Together #Jerusalema50million."
'Jerusalema' has also performed well on streaming platforms. Last week the musician expressed his gratitude to his fans for the continued support. “Thank you for the love. I'm currently number 1 in South Africa with more than 1.2 million monthly listeners on @SpotifySA thank you for streaming my music,” he wrote on Twitter.
In June, the song was among the top three most viewed music videos by a South African artist after it had reached 26 million views on YouTube in just six months after its release.
However, the artists did not get recognition from the South African Music Awards (SAMAs). ‘Jerusalema’ has not received a nomination ahead of the upcoming awards ceremony, which will take place from 3 to 7 August.
