Burna Boy signs to Universal
Nigerian dancehall star Burna Boy recently announced that he has officially signed with the world's biggest record label: Universal Music.
"Sealed - officially not on the same level as y'all," Burna Boy wrote next to a picture of a contract he signed with the label’s subsidiary Island Music in Rosebank, Johannesburg this week. He made the announcement last week via his Instagram page, where he posted a picture of the signed agreement. The deal appears to be an ‘Exclusive Songwriter Agreement’ with the Universal Music Publishing Group.
He also took to Twitter: “We did it Gambo! I'm officially the first contemporary Nigerian act to sign to #Island #Universal. Work time - expect only greatness and megacy!" (sic)
The Nigerian star (real name Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu) recently scored a hit collaboration ‘All Eyes On Me’ with South African rapper AKA. He reportedly parted ways with his previous label, Aristokrat Records, last year.
Universal houses global pop talent such as Justin Bieber, Drake and Nicki Minaj.
Burna Boy’s signing follows US-based Kenyan rapper Hardstone’s signing to Atlantic Records last month.
