Ghana: Spotify, Sony Music Publishing host camp to empower creatives
Spotify recently partnered with Sony Music Publishing to host a ground-breaking publishing camp in Ghana, aimed at fostering the development of musicians, producers, publishers, and songwriters.
The event featured exclusive panel discussions with industry experts such as GuiltyBeatz and Wale Davies (Tec) from Show Dem Camp, who shared insights into production trends, creative techniques, and promotional tools.
“Amplifying African artists is a core value that drives the work we do. Great writing is fundamental to every track that resonates and leaves fans singing all day,” Spotify Sub-Saharan Africa head of music Phiona Okumu said. “Together with Sony Music Publishing, we hosted a session focused on the techniques behind crafting lyrics, beats, and melodies that make us fall in love with a song.”
During the panel discussions, GuiltyBeatz highlighted the importance of creating timeless music, encouraging attendees to embrace creative freedom and draw inspiration from diverse sources such as personal experiences, cultural moments, and global events. He emphasised that authenticity and innovation are key to producing standout music. Wale Davies added that surrounding oneself with collaborators who inspire and challenge creativity is essential for pushing boundaries.
The camp also featured a hands-on masterclass, attended by approximately 150 participants, which provided guidance on maximising Spotify’s creative support tools. The session included insights into the Spotify for Artists platform, offering resources for songwriting, promotional tools, and data-driven strategies to reach global audiences.
“Songwriters and producers make music happen,” Okumu remarked. “What they do raises the bar and keeps people infatuated with African music as songs become hits.”
Spotify for Artists equips creatives with tools such as Songwriter Pages, Spotify Clips, and clickable in-app song credits, helping them control their artistic narrative while giving due recognition to collaborators. By providing these resources, Spotify and Sony Music Publishing aim to empower Africa’s musicians to elevate their careers and connect with audiences worldwide.
The camp is part of Spotify’s ongoing commitment to supporting African artists and showcasing the continent’s vibrant music scene on a global stage.
