Ghana Music Awards UK reveal academy members
The organisers of the Ghana Music Awards UK have unveiled a nine-member academy ahead of the ceremony on 9 October.
The team will be led by Freddie Annan and includes academy members Confidence Haugen, Mark Darlington, Ato Brown Anderson, Valentine Nyann, Ludwig, Teddy Abrokwah, Kweku Manko and Kweku Ibrahim Badu.
The members’ announcement arrives two weeks after this year’s nominations were opened. The academy’s core duty will be to help the board shortlist the nominees and select some of the winners.
Now in its fifth edition, the annual event facilitates an environment for collaboration and cultural exchange, and celebrates Ghanaian artists living in Ghana and the UK. The awards make a return after they were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic last year.
The event will present awards in 33 voting and two honorary categories, recognising works released between 1 April 2020 and 31 March 2021. Artists or their representatives can submit works here.
The deadline for submissions is 22 June and voting will be done online via the Ghana Music Awards UK's official website or through selected mobile networks.
Previous winners of the Ghana Music Awards UK include dancehall musician Shatta Wale, who was the biggest winner in 2019 with three awards, including Reggae/Dancehall Artist of the Year, Popular Song of the Year and Artist of the Year. Other past winners include Kuami Eugene, Wendy Shay, Eshun, Medikal, Sarkodie and Samini.
“We wish everyone the best of luck as we are looking forward to celebrating the fifth anniversary of the biggest night of music and awards in the UK,” the organisers said.
