Call for applications: Market Theatre sound technician in SA
The Market Theatre Foundation (MTF) is seeking an experienced candidate to fill the position of sound technician in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The successful candidate will work in the technical unit and will assemble, operate and maintain technical equipment used to record, amplify, enhance, mix or reproduce sound for all events, shows and conferences.
Job objectives, key responsibilities and key result areas
- Operate sound system, set up and run audio equipment during performances and live events.
- Assessing the acoustics of the performance area and assembling and operating the necessary equipment.
- Set up the sound and AV equipment in accordance with the requirements of the incoming production and in consultation with the head of technical and stage services as per documented technical rider or specifications.
- Select, position, adjust and operate the sound and AV equipment used for amplification, projection and recording.
- Applying technical knowledge of sound mixing equipment to achieve the determined artistic objectives.
- Record sound onto digital audio CD or programme audio and AV cues into QLab.
- Programme mixing consoles as per engineer/designer’s artistic objectives.
- Monitor audio and AV signals to detect sound quality deviations or malfunctions before and during performances and live events.
- Basic operation of audio and AV equipment during performances and live events.
- Anticipate and correct any problems.
- Efficient and effective management of the communication channels between stakeholders.
- Consult with the head of technical and stage services, including but not limited to the entire production team to determine the sound requirements.
- Communicate with suppliers, keeping up to date with new technology, inform the production team of new equipment on the market.
- Manage assets to minimise loss or damage.
- Maintain a full and frequently updated list of all available equipment with their status/lifespan to the head of technical and stage services.
- Train interns and stage managers on sound and AV operations.
- Strike and safely store away all audio and AV equipment after performances and live events.

- Draw up workable maintenance plans with the head of technical and stage services.
Preferred qualifications, skills, experience
- A relevant bachelor’s degree or diploma in sound technology or sound engineer.
- Minimum three years of experience.
- Knowledge of audio and visual (AV) design, sound mixer, MA lighting and DiGiCo console and media server.
- Knowledge of Protools, Cubase, Studio One and QLab programmes.
- Knowledge in media technology and/or production.
- Knowledge in technical aspects of theatre productions.
- Ability to diagnose technical problems such as delays malfunctions of the sound board, and errors in order to determine the true cause of the problem and solve it at a reasonable timeframe.
