Wiyaala set to anchor radio show
Ghanaian artist Wiyaala will present a 90-minute programme every Thursday on Radio Progress starting 23 November.
According to an official statement, the programme Time with Wiyaala is to consist of music made by artists from Ghana’s Upper West Region. Wiyaala will interview these artists on her show and talk about their ambitions.
“I’ll be encouraging the young musicians to work on their live performance skills,” said Wiyaala. “Artists who mime are unlikely to make it to international stages. The platform also gives me the opportunity to push the causes of children and young women.”
Speaking about the songs she will play on the show, Wiyaala said, “I’ll be trying to introduce my audience to the diverse forms of music that exist in our region. While technology is helpful to music making, I feel we are in danger of losing something of value if we don’t draw on our rich heritage when making modern music.”
Radio Progress was established in 1997 and caters to the Upper West area, broadcasting its programmes in several languages including English, Waale and Briffor.
Wiyaala’s relationship with the radio station goes back to 2014 when she was named ambassador at the Radio Progress Music Awards. She is also affiliated with UNICEF Ghana, with which she has done a number of campaigns.
