SA: DJ Kenzhero and Tha_Muzik share What’s Wrong With Groovin? album
South African DJs Kenzhero and Tha_Muzik have released their jazz compilation album What’s Wrong With Groovin?, which is available for streaming and download across major digital platforms.
Curated and produced by DJ Kenzhero and Tha_Muzik, who hosted a radio show by the same name on Kaya FM until 2021, the album brings together some of the top South African jazz artists to reimagine the works of legends such as Nina Simone, Miriam Makeba, Brenda Fassie, Lebo Mathosa and Letta Mbulu.
The project features Msaki, Spha Mdlalose, Zarcia, Yonela Mnana, Melo B Jones and Pilani Bubu, with bassist and producer Vimbs Mavimbs the creative at the helm.
According to DJ Kenzhero and Tha_Muzik, the album pays homage to South African culture, social activists and the importance of keeping the tradition of storytelling alive. Through the voices of popular artists, it celebrates the transformative power of music and its ability to bring about positive change in society.
“Music possesses a remarkable ability to transcend barriers and unite people,” the duo said. “This title encourages everyone to embrace the positive energy and rhythm that music provides. It serves as an invitation to engage in meaningful social commentary and expression while relishing the incredible music that has shaped our culture.
“The project was conceived to honour the individuals who played a crucial role in achieving freedom in South Africa and to carry forward their legacy through artistic expression. The title of the album poses a question that prompts individuals to contemplate the profound influence of music in bringing joy, healing, and unity.”
