SA jazzist Linda Sikhakhane signs with Universal Music
South African jazz composer, arranger and saxophonist Linda Sikhakhane signed a deal with Universal Music Group (UMG) at the label’s headquarters in Johannesburg, South Africa, on 22 February.
Following the partnership, Sikhakhane, who is known for his innovative fusion of traditional South African rhythms and contemporary jazz elements, is poised to reach new heights in his musical career.
“It’s really an honour to join such a prestigious stable,” Sikhakhane said. “A voice of a community is more potent than that of an individual, so joining this family will help the music reach many hearts.”
UMG managing director Manusha Sarawan said: “As part of the Universal Music family, Linda Sikhakhane joins a roster of world-renowned jazz artists and industry pioneers. His signing marks an exciting addition to the label’s commitment to nurturing diverse talent across South Africa, the continent and beyond.”
Sikhakhane’s love for music began at an early age but flourished at the Siyakhula Music Centre under the tutelage of Brian Thusi. After earning a diploma in jazz from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, he moved to Johannesburg to advance his career as a saxophonist, where he subsequently won the SAMRO Overseas Scholarship Competition in 2016.
In 2020, he was featured by Apple Music as part of the streaming platform’s New Artist Spotlight series for the month of November, making him the second South African jazz musician to achieve this feat. His debut album Two Sides, One Mirror (2017) garnered critical acclaim, setting the stage for a promising career.
Named the 2022 Standard Bank Young Artist for Jazz, his talent and dedication have been recognised throughout the industry. He has worked with an array of local artists including the late Sibongile Khumalo, Marcus Wyatt, Khaya Mahlangu, Nduduzo Makhathini, Thandiswa Mazwai and Herbie Tsoaeli as well as American musicians Gregory Porter, Rodney Kendrick, Rhonda Ross Kendrick, Logan Richardson, Derrick Hodge and Ted Daniel.
