National Arts Council of Namibia awards $80 000 in bursaries
The National Arts Council of Namibia (NACN) has awarded bursaries worth N$1,526,032.70 (about $80 000) to 36 applicants, reaffirming its commitment to nurturing talent in the country’s creative and cultural sectors.
Out of 116 applications received for the NACN Bursary Fund, 36 students were selected to receive financial support for their studies and training in various fields within the creative and cultural industries. The investment, the council said, highlights its dedication to fostering the growth and development of Namibia’s vibrant arts scene.
“As we celebrate this milestone, we remain committed to enhancing opportunities for education and personal development,” NACN said. “Our dedication to building a well-educated and skilled Namibian workforce aligns with the national vision for sustainable development and growth.
“Each of these recipients has demonstrated exceptional dedication, creativity, and potential in their respective fields. The bursary will provide them with the resources and opportunities to further their studies and make meaningful contributions.”
The council said the approved bursaries will cover key areas essential to the advancement of the cultural and creative industries. These include game design, new media design, digital art, curatorship, architecture, graphic design, jewellery making, arts and cultural policy and management, arts and cultural journalism, art research, arts education, and organology.
The NACN also emphasised its commitment to providing career-specific support in the arts and culture sector. “Building the capacity of experts and establishing a network of qualified professional artists and artisans is essential to our mandate of supporting the growth of Namibia’s creative and cultural industries.”
The National Arts Fund, a state programme established by the government, plays a crucial role in advancing both contemporary and traditional Namibian arts, with a particular focus on underserved artistic communities. The fund was created through the National Arts Fund Act No. 1 of 2005 and is governed by NACN.
