Ghana’s Wanzam The Classic DJ drops new single Nonsense
Ghana’s Wanzam The Classic DJ has released his new single titled ‘Nonsense’, which is available for streaming and download on all major digital platforms.
The record, which features Marince Omario and Gaga Ranks, pays homage to his roots in hip hop while celebrating Ghanaian youth culture.
‘Nonsense’ draws inspiration from early 2000s local rap, specifically veteran producer Hammer of The Last Two, who is widely considered a pioneer of the Ghanaian hip hop variant, hiplife.
The artist says the new track, produced by Lee Hendrix and following last year’s alté-leaning single ‘Soba’, showcases the immense creative dexterity of Ghanaian youth. It blends traditional elements with modern beats to create a sound that is both timeless and contemporary.
“‘Nonsense’ is more than just music; it’s a powerful statement that demands attention,” Wanzam The Classic DJ said. “It underscores its bold message: don’t mess with us. Each artist brings their unique flair to the table, creating a synergy that is palpable throughout the track.”
Speaking to Music In Africa, the DJ, born Joey Joseph Nii Ayi Otokunor, said: “Hammer of The Last Two laid the foundation for Ghanaian hip hop. Studying his work is really about understanding where we come from to shape where we’re going. His work shaped my understanding and love for music. For me, this is a rare opportunity to celebrate the veteran producer and hip hop in general.” He added that the single heralds an EP due before the end of 2024.
Over the past five years, Wanzam Yhe Classic DJ has made a name for himself in Accra’s alté scene, working with artists such as Black Sherif, DJay, Baaba J and Essilfie. He serves as a resident DJ at Accra-based Guide Radio.
This year, Wanzam The Classic DJ has broadened his scope by delving into artist management. He has taken on roles as the creative director and executive producer for rapper Kojo Trip’s Ride Along EP and emerging singer Treky’s ‘Mamiwota’ single.
