SA: Gemma Fassie drops new single What You Want
South African singer Gemma Fassie has released her latest track titled ‘What You Want’.
The track, which is available for streaming and download, dives deep into the emotional clarity found after a breakup. Drawing on the soulful sounds of 1990s R&B, the song channels the influence of legends like Janet Jackson and Aaliyah, while incorporating a modern twist inspired by contemporary artists like Victoria Monet.
The title ‘What You Want’ speaks to the urgency for transparency in relationships where love lingers but personal independence and self-love take precedence. Co-written by Fassie and Rehsa, and executive-produced by Yoshi, the record fuses pop undertones with a heartfelt message about the liberation from confronting difficult emotions.
“Even though I’m heartbroken, I’m learning to find myself while navigating the unknown,” Fassie said. “I’m content with this journey of self-discovery.”
The song resonates with listeners who have had to balance the pain of loss with the joy of personal growth, and its nostalgic yet fresh sound makes it an instant hit.
Born and raised in Cape Town, Gemma Fassie is not just a singer but a storyteller with a passion for healing and inspiring others through her music. Coming from a musical family, her exposure to various genres from a young age has deeply influenced her sound. Always exploring her musical roots, she weaves those influences into the melodies she creates today. Balancing school with her passion for music, she became fully independent, honing her craft as both a songwriter and an audio engineer.
Fassie has steadily carved a name for herself in the South African entertainment industry. As a recording artist, performer, and digital content creator, she has graced some of South Africa’s most renowned stages and theatres. Her experience in a classical choir has further sharpened her musical ear, contributing to her unique sound.
In 2020, she released her debut single ‘Best Life’, followed by a three-track EP titled After Hours, showcasing her versatility and drive. Her talent and hard work were recognised when she was nominated for a Basadi In Music Award in 2023, marking a milestone in her rising career.
