Botswana: Dato Seiko shares new single Sahasrara
Batswana singer Dato Seiko has made a return with her latest single, ‘Sahasrara’, an evocative exploration of personal healing and spiritual awakening, released through Warner Music Africa.
Inspired by the Sanskrit term for the “crown chakra,” Sahasrara delves into the complex journey from deep friendship to emotional distance, maintaining a sense of grace and refusing to let pain breed bitterness. The track showcases Dato Seiko’s signature blend of softness and power, solidifying her presence in the music scene.
Named after the chakra that connects the soul to higher consciousness, ‘Sahasrara’ is a personal anthem of resilience. Describing it as a “soft diss track,” Dato offers a tender expression of her pain, deeply rooted in her belief in karma. “Even in my hurt, I remain gracious,” Dato Seiko said. “I don’t wish ill on anyone, regardless of how much they’ve hurt me, because I truly believe in karma and all her shapes and forms.”
In ‘Sahasrara’, Dato unpacks the unresolved emotions that linger when time alone cannot heal all wounds. Through poignant lyrics, she questions the nuances of relationships, singing, “Was I catastrophising the situation, or just gaslighting myself into letting unsettling feelings slide for the sake of love?” Every line reveals vulnerability, leading to a cathartic release that captures Dato’s emotional truth.
The song’s emotive layers are enriched by backing vocals from Sandi Ncube, which amplify the song’s raw feeling. The melodic arrangement complements Dato Seiko’s style, creating a soundscape that “feels and sounds like healing.”
Reflecting on the creative process, Dato Seiko describes the experience of writing ‘Sahasrara’ as “painful but necessary.” She recounted: “I relived memories I’d buried, wondering about all the ‘what-ifs’ and questioning if I was too soft for this world. But by the end of it, I knew this was my favourite song – it felt like a journey through pain and into peace.”
‘Sahasrara’ is a testament to Dato Seiko’s growth as an artist, inviting listeners to connect with their own moments of introspection and healing. This release offers an authentic, heartfelt experience that bridges personal pain with spiritual insight.
