Bio

Kelvin Sulugwe is a Malawian author, entrepreneur and diplomat who was born and raised in Mchinji, Malawi. He is the founder Akometsi Group based in Malawi's Capital City, Lilongwe.

Kelvin Sulugwe has authored two books, Life is a Journey and In Honest Ways, both of which are available on Digital Platforms including Amazon and Google Books.

In Honest Ways book was also made into audio books and is available for downloads on Malawi’s leading music and audio websites as well as streaming sites such as Spotify and iTunes.

The Malawi Music industry is the easiest one to break through compared to other countries. Also, the same industry is the most difficult to maintain relevance for a long time.

Imagine after all the years of hard work coupled with sleepless nights and personal dedication, then boom, someone accuses you of being Satanic. We will tackle someday.

Eli Njuchi has been a force to reckon with from the time he dropped The Book of Z. He came in, a shy young boy with little words that said enough.

As young as he was when he made a debut, the boy captured captured heart with songs like Zitaye, Zitheke, Phone and Honest.

His composition has been one of a kind, delivering hard hitting messages on a very soft beat, without stammering with creativity that is the spice Eli Njuchi has brought to the industry. It’s almost impossible not to recognize Eli Njuchi, especially after Gu Gu Gu, his biggest hi to this far.

Despite all the fluids of creativity flowing through his veins, he still looked around and landed himself in very capable management hands of Prince Chikweba, whom we previously called Prince Carth, an equally down to earth guy with so much to give.

We have seen young people that came with a bang on the scene, only to get lost along the way in a darkness of scandals, self-exaltation, womanising and hoping to leave a life that their current means could not sustain.

Eli Njuch has been a role model among role models. He has managed to live a quiet, yet loud life. His works have done the talking and his actions have echoed his humbleness.

What a young man headed for greatness.

As he launches his album today in Mangochi, we can only be proud of what is yet to come from the young man who has established himself as one of the most relevant artists of this time.

How a WhatsApp Voice Note changed Tannah’s life

It is good when we put up energy in everything we do, even on the little things that people tend to mock at the beginning.

My friend Tannah has a very good story on how he has made himself a brand from speaking English, in a broken way, like this sentence below:

“If you it’s not knowing how to sambil don’t entering the water because you will mill and death, no phwexing.”

From the example above to many more other funny compositions, Tannah has over the time managed to capture hearts and establish himself as one of the most loved commiedian in Malawi, despite a few others failing to accept the talent behind his signature comedies.

As I recall, it all started with a Voice Note in 2017.

At that time, I was with my friend Lanken Nkhata. He played it on his phone and kept laughing as he listened to it. It was an advise about swimming in Lake Malawi after a few people had drawned. Tannah presented it in his ways and the good message also became a good joke. The VN got shared in different WhatsApp groups and that was the genesis of Tannah, Mr Broken English.

I got interested about him and asked who the voice behind the Voice Note was for. Lanken told me all about Tannah and later that week, I finally met him at Lanken’s house.

Since then, we became more than friends, he became a young brother I am proud to call anytime and laugh about our sorrows. Over the years, my home has become his home and I have seen him grow his brand from strength to strength.

There were those who undermined him, even getting some bad reviews in mainstream media, but where there is a will there will always be a way. He pushed on for recognition and to this day, the name Tannah does not need introduction in people’s homes.

Through his art, he was able to be selected as one of the participants for Mandela fellowship by the US government, a program that has taken him to the USA where he has spent a few months, learning and interacting with different other participants from across the world.

The fellowship that he is part of offers a very good platform to expand his comedy domain. But for all that to happen, it has taken a lot of work and dedication from him. He embraced what he can offer and he does it to his best ability.

I was happy when in 2020 he won UNESCO Covid19 Best Awareness Award which he co-produced with HD Plus Creations Ltd.

Taking his game further, Tannah has also been featured in movies such as Fatsani and Highbrow which are on DSTV’s Showmax and Zambezi Magic.

As I always tell him, he may not be able to make everyone laugh, but to those he manages to make laugh, we laugh our lungs out. After all, some people have more problems than his jokes can afford to lessen.

Fans left hungry for Onesimus’ highly anticipated album, African Butter

If you follow Onesimus Muzik on Facebook, then you must have come across snippets of his songs in the upcoming album, African Butter, as he is also proudly called these days.

There is no denying the super talent in Onesimus who started as Armstrong, many years ago before retiring to gospel, and later retire from retirement to make music for all, with his come back getting a very good reception from followers.

“Me and my team have worked so hard, day, night, months, weeks, We have given it all so that my fans could enjoy this work of art. We traveled many miles, sleepless nights, fought battles but In the end obstacles could not stop the moving train. I am grateful because I have the right people in my circle and I want to take this moment to appreciate my management. “AFRICAN BUTTER” drops September. He posted on his Facebook Page.

The artist has shared a number of TikTok videos, giving people an idea of what to expect from his album and probably living up to the threat when he told other musicians to release their music before he does,

“Ndakhala ndikuonera ti ma clips ta Onesmus ta nyimbo zomwe zili nkudza. Album iyiyi kulibeko skip. Kaya mtengo izakhala pa bwanji koma ndizayesetsa kugulitsa kidney kuti ndigule basi. Kukuoneka kuti kukubwera bomba,” commented Malawi’s Best Hip-Hop artist Kalawe. Kalawe is indeed the Best, Mindset is everything.

Among others, Onesimus also announced his collabo with Janta titled Ex Lover and shared a snippet of the same. He has done quite a good job teasing his followers who cant wait for the butter to butter down their musical bread. And we also know the stories with Janta and Onesimus, what a combination by Ex Husbands.

“Just a word of advice. You can release your songs now before African Butter does. Whatever you do with this information is up to you,” posted Hiker Yangairo Yangairo who hikes with a very expensive shoe.

To business minded artists, this is what you need to know

While others take music as a way to get fame and be recognized by slay queens, there are those who take the industry as a full time job and business. Even those with little or no talent have made headway in the industry simply by having a good team.

If being a full time musician is your goal and intend to excel, here is a team you should consider forming.

1. Manager

This should be a person you can be with full time, probably your best friend, brother, sister, just not your lover. He should be someone who can control you, chase groupies away from you and be able to negotiate deals for you.

He is a point of contact on your team and someone who brings everyone together. As a musician, your focus should be on your music creativity and leave the rest to the manager who should work on creating business networks and bridging you with the industry key players.

2. Publicist

If you intend to build a brand around your talent, then you need a publicist. He/she should be someone with media knowledge and connections. People will enjoy your music when they know your name and it shouldn’t be just a name, but a brand name that the corporate world can work with.

A publicist will help you with brand visibility, fan growth and material promo from time to time. He/she will, among others, be responsible for your photo gallery, social media management and anything that connects you with the public. Most of us must have heard of Eli Njuchi even before hearing his music, now that’s a brand you need to build.

3. Music Publisher

This one is not really a promoter, but someone to handle publication of your music and make sure you earn your loyalties. Radio is not dead, you need this person to take your music to radios, DJs, TVs, streaming platforms and get you sorted with copyright bodies. Looks simple, but it’s a whole lot of trouble getting all this done. Others may simply decide to work with a distributing company. I just don’t know if we have them in Malawi.

4. Lawyer

If whatever you do involves contracts, then you need a lawyer. It can’t be someone full time, but the one you can run through with every paper that requires your signature. A lawyer is your eyes and translator. You might think you know it, but in legal matters, there is something you don’t know and it’s this something that can end a career. Plus, you need someone to protect your intellectual property.

Other less involving but equally important roles as you grow may include:

1. DJ
2. Producer
3. Creative Director
4. Promotion Company
5. Investment and financial advisor

As you start your journey, you may not really need to advertise for these roles and stress on how you pay them. Just look around your circle. You should have the people you need in your circle. If your circle does not have the people you need, then you are in the wrong circle.

Have friends who believe in your talent and want to be part of it. They can start part time and drive the goal to success. Treat them with respect. They don’t need you and you don’t need them, but you need one another, you as a brand and them as brand drivers. It’s like a human body. The heart needs blood and blood needs veins to flow, while veins need the flesh which also need bones to stand on.

When the money starts getting through, never dump such people for those who will come to you with experience or more connections, that will be the end of you. Instead, empower your circle because latecomers will drain you and leave you for another new guy on the block. Stick with people who were there at the start, they know both your victory and story.

I know big people who are struggling now for dumping their initial teams after they grew big and brought new people to drive a vision started by day ones. Money cannot do anything, it is love that can achieve even the impossible. Ignoring this simple principle, ends in tears.
