Baaba Maal (born 12 November 1953) is a singer, percussionist and guitarist from Podor, Senegal. He is one of the best known Senegalese musicians alongside such artists as Youssou N'Dour and Ismaël Lô.
Baaba Maal has released 11 studio albums as part of an illustrious career spanning three decades. Since his first album release in the late 1980s, the versatile musicians has forged an eclectic style blending Afro-pop, dance, worldbeat, traditional Senegalese music, folk and desert blues.
The singer and guitarist was nominated in the Best World Music category for ‘Firin’ In Fouta’ at the 1996 Grammy Awards and has worked with such names as Mansour Seck, Mumford & Sons, Andy Shephard, Peter Gabriel and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Chris Blackwell.
Baaba Maal also worked on the 'Black Hawk Down' film soundtrack and has played at numerous international festivals such as Bonnaroo, the Sierra Nevada World Music Festival and the Harare International Festival of the Arts, among many others.
His 2016 album The Traveller earned Baaba Maal rave reviews from publications such as The Guardian, NPR and AllMusic.
