Qute Kaye

Qute is one of the leading upcoming artists on the music scene that could be all over your radio and TV this year. On Christmas Day 2004, he was crowned Mr. Sabrina's Pub and won a recording deal for a whole album at Hope Mukasa's Bavava Studios and 150,000/- after his rendition of R Kelly's Gotham City convinced the judges beyond reasonable doubt that he deserved these Christmas gifts. He is a regular performer at Sabrina's Pub's and Alleygators Balling alley's Karaokes and many that are keen on music must know about him.

We had a quick interview with him to ask him about himself and what he plans to do after he is done with recording his new album.

Qute is not merely a stage name but is his real name. His full name is Kaye Brian Ivan Qute, to mention but a few. His mom has showered him with many names. He remembers that he has been singing since he was a child. His music has a lot Church influence, as all four of his mother's siblings are Pastors. He grew up singing at Sunday schools and in various Church choirs and that is how he got better and better.
When I asked him why he didn't stick to Gospel music, he was quick to explain that initially in the traditional Church, Hip-hop and RnB music wasn't easily accepted, as the older generation of Churchgoers didn't relate to it easily. Fiona Mukasa, a renowned gospel artist was a member of his church and gave him a lot of encouragement but things were still tough. Hip-hop in Churches only started to grow after Kirk Franklin.
And besides, it was simpler to get popular and earn money making secular music. Qute then decided to make up his mind and turn to secular music. He nevertheless plans to have at least three gospel songs on his forthcoming project.

He has previous experience in recording but is not very fond of his first tracks as they were done in a poor studio and the producer was not good either. He keeps these to listen to at home and doesn't say much about them.

He also got into the Popstars and Project Fame competitions but unfortunately didn't make it through the preliminaries. He was just short of the last 15 finalists in the Popstars contest but after watching his stage performance, I believe it was mere misfortune.

In the Project Fame competition, he went deep and was still in the competition even after Michael Ross and Morris Kirya. He too knows these guys are reputable artists in Uganda and he failed to understand what the Project Fame was looking for. All in all, the day belonged to Miss Yvonne Nabeta.

After he completes all his studio sessions, he hopes his sponsors shall go one further and help him shoot a video. We'll fill you in on any developments.
