DJ Cortega
Bio
Cortega has earned a reputation for bringing Africa-influenced heat to the dancefloor. Since 2005, teaming up with DJ Underdog, he played an active role in pushing the afrobeat and afro house sound on the East Coast of the US. He followed his passion for African music, moving to Nairobi (Kenya) in 2010, where he co-founded ElectrAfrique with Kenyan DJ collective Electrique DJs. He moved to Dakar (Senegal) in 2016, where ElectrAfrique found a new home, as a monthly event showcasing electronic music from across Africa and its diaspora.
He has toured in about fifteen countries, performing in African capitals from Dakar to Johannesburg via Addis Abeba, Accra, Abidjan, Bamako, Monrovia, Kigali, Bujumbura or Conakry and beyond to Bogota, New York, Miami, Berlin, Paris, Port-au-Prince, Lausanne and Mumbai.
Cortega is a co-founder of “Everyday Afrique”, a partnership between Everyday People, OkayAfrica and ElectrAfrique, which has given birth to one of New York’s hottest diaspora-centric parties. Cortega played at several major events such as Central Park New York’s Summerstage, Good Times Africa, Blankets & Wine in Nairobi, as well as Miami’s Winter Music Conference among others. He sits on the creative direction team for Nairobi’s annual Africa Nouveau Festival.
Over the course of his career, he has shared the stage with the likes of Wizkid, Black Coffee, Boddhi Satva, Tony Allen, Cheikh Lo, Mafikizolo, Uhuru, Nickodemus, Rancido, Black Motion, Heavy K, Spinna, Jose Marquez, Marfox, Just A Band and Sauti Sol, to name a few.
