Dumama & Kechou
About
Using the rich complexities of the multi-faceted experience in post truth and reconciliation South Africa; the never-ending contradictions, politics of love and spirit life as inspiration musician Dumama (born Gugulethu Duma) collaborates with multi-instrumentalist Kechou (born Kerim Becker) in composing and performing a layered experience building live loops on the spot with hand- made instruments from different parts of the continent. This Pan-African collaboration from South Africa to Algeria is united and enriched by creating what audiences describe as Nomadic Future Folk Music. The two are fuelled by intergenerational dialogues with ancestors, living and deceased - and have spent extensive time learning from elders, Madosini and Madala Kunene. Dumama and Kechou use music as a tool to tackle issues around identity, distorted realities, interrogating free will and parallel worlds with a performance that leaves audiences mezmerised, curious and moved towards change. Together they create a sonic landscape fusing ancient sounds, with tonal emergence and decay of glitchy electronics as they meditate on the end of history being postponed.
