Mumbi Poetry

Mumbi is a writer, event curator, and performing spoken word poet from Nairobi, Kenya.

Mumbi began writing and performing poetry in 2015, and competed in Kenya's Poetry Slam in 2016. Mumbi then went on to be the featured artist in events in Nairobi, such as Kwani? Open Mic and Poetry Cafe. Mumbi then went on to be a featured act on the popular Kenyan TV show.

In 2017, Mumbi began hosting her own poetry events, as a way of creating a platform for herself, in an industry where she felt her voice was not being heard. Mumbi also used her events as platforms to give upcoming poets an opportunity to share their work.
In 2018, Mumbi led a poetry worskop in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. She also went on to perform at poetry events in Kampala, Uganda, in 2018 and again in 2019.

In 2019, Mumbi completed her studies at Riara University, Nairobi, where she studied for a Bachelor's Degree in Law. Apart from being an artist, Mumbi is also passionate about social activism, and using her voice and platform to advocate for issues dear to her. In her final year of studies, Mumbi wrote a 14-thousand word dissertation titled "Commercial Sex Work in Kenya: The Pretentious Moral Bubble", where she brings to light the plight of commercial sex workers.

Mumbi's dream is to be a front-runner in making spoken word poetry a mainstream art form, that is appreciated for its ability to advocate, and entertain. Poetry is not poetry until you start telling the truth.
