UNIVERSITY OF ZULULAND CHOIR

Bio

The choir was established in 2001 by students from different departments of the university with an aim to use music for preservation, documentation and promotion of South African traditional music, the choir also does awareness campaigns, entertainment, festivals and competitions. It has won many competitions such as Arts and Culture choir competitions(2005), Imvunge Choir competitions (2006), Premiers choir competitions(2009), National Champions on VACMA choir competitions(2011). This choir has promoted South African traditional music even at an international level such as U.S North Carolina(2013), U.S Chicago(2014) Germany Heidelberg (2018). In 2018 the choir released their debut Album titled "Halala Syanibongela" the album was a collection of mostly traditional songs and it was well received as a results it was then nominated by South African Traditional Music Awards in 2019 as the Best Traditional Dance Group. The choir has also been appointed by the Deputy President of South Africa Hon David Mabuza to be National ambassadors of TB/HIV and AIDS. The choir travel to different places educating communities about topical health issues through music. The choir is currently working on the second Album. The choir has also worked with a number of well known musicians such as Mbuso Khoza, Dumza Maswana, Nonzwakazi, Dr. Lindelani Mkhize and many others.
