Boyd Kalumbi

Boyd Kalumbi is a man on a mission. Hailing from the Samfya District in the beautiful Luapula Province of Zambia, Boyd has always had a love for music. Whether he was tapping his feet to the beat of a local drum circle or singing along to the latest hit song on the radio, Boyd knew that music was his true calling.

After years of honing his skills as a music enthusiast, Boyd had the opportunity of a lifetime when he was selected to participate in the Zamrock training residency. This incredible program was organized by Modzi Arts, a company that is dedicated to promoting and preserving African music and arts. The residency lasted six days from 24th April, 2023 to 29th April, 2023.

Some of his influences in music industry are the likes of P.K Chishala, Kieth Mulevu , Paul Ngozi, Danny, and Petersen. He is also a lover of Zambian traditional sounds.

During the residency, Boyd had the privilege of being mentored by some of the greatest legends in the industry. Jess White, Director of AKUM agency, Rikki Illilonga of Mosi-O-Tunya Band, Mr. Chanda Emmanuel (Jagari) of the WITCH Band, and Julia, the director of Modzi Arts, all took Boyd under their wings and showed him the ropes.

With their guidance and support, Boyd learned the ins and outs of the music industry. He discovered how to identify talented artists and connect them with the right venues and audiences. He also gained valuable knowledge about contracts, negotiations, and marketing strategies.

But it wasn't just the technical aspects of the business that Boyd learned about. He also gained a deep appreciation for the power of music to bring people together and create positive change in the world. Boyd was inspired by the way that the musicians he worked with used their art to spread messages of love, hope, and unity.

Boyd was particularly struck by the story of Zamrock music in Zambia. Zamrock is a unique genre that emerged in the 1970s and blended traditional African rhythms with Western rock and funk influences. It was a time of great social and political upheaval in Zambia, and the music reflected the people's hopes and struggles.

Through his mentorship with Rikki Illilonga of Mosi-O-Tunya Band and Mr. Chanda Emmanuel (Jagari) of the WITCH Band, both pioneers of Zamrock music, Boyd learned about the incredible legacy of this genre. He discovered how these musicians used their platform to speak out against corruption and injustice, and to empower the people of Zambia.

Now, Boyd is taking that legacy and running with it. As an upcoming booking agent, he is dedicated to promoting the best and brightest musical talents from Zambia and beyond. He wants to create opportunities for artists to share their music with the world and connect with audiences who are hungry for something new and exciting.
