Chi Temu
Bio
Chi Temu is a singer/songwriter hailing from Tanzania; spurned on by her colorful upbringing, she began writing music at the age of 13 on the piano before moving onto the guitar, expanding her musical horizons and perfecting her signature soulful sound.
Chi's early performance career began by busking on the streets of Liverpool, where she would captivate audiences with her raspy vocals and blend of blues, jazz, indie, and soul music. Her talent eventually caught the attention of the BBC, and she received radio plays and invitations to perform at festivals such as Brouhaha and Liverpool Music Week.
Since returning to Tanzania, Chi Temu has become a celebrated voice in the country's music scene. She has opened for international artists like Bucie and Black Motion and has curated her own music nights, giving a platform to underground artists across the country. Her showcase event "Chi and Friends" celebrated five years and has helped to build a stronger creative community in Dar es Salaam while launching some artists' platforms.
Chi Temu has also used her music and poetry to shed light on important community and feminist issues, performing pieces for organizations such as UNDP, Marie Stopes, and Friedrich Ebert Stiftung. She has been a Nafasi Artist in Residence, where she explored interactive performance and the complexities of love in music.
Constantly evolving, nothing fulfills Chi more than the energy and intimacy of live performance. Chi Temu treasures this and bringing diverse voices together.
