Gato Preto
Bio
Gato Preto ('Black Cat' in Portuguese) is a Afrofuturistic music duo based in Germany.
Gato Preto comprises rapper Gata Misteriosa (Mozambique/Portugal) and DJ/producer Lee Bass (Ghana/Germany). The group is known for unveiling African music paradise rooted in the polyrhythm of Ghanaian bass and Mozambican Portuguese slang.
The band built their name through stunning high energetic live performances fused with electronic beats and powerful live percussion as well as intense vocal prowess of Gata Misteriosa. Their stage outfits, dancers, visuals and contagious rhythms make up an electric live show that nobody could ever forget.
In 2015, the group performed at the African Futures Festival in Johannesburg and Uganda's Nyege Nyege Festival. They have collaborated with such international artists as Edu K, Spoek Mathambo and Mc Zulu.
In the press:
"Gato Preto's sound is insistent to the point of relentlessness: The globetrotting band piles on layer upon layer of percussion — traditional and electronic — while brandishing earworms like bazookas. Between the feast of rhythm and the wild Afro-futuristic garb, Gato Preto doesn't just put on a show; it makes a scene,” NPR Music.
"The best dance party of the week was thrown by Gato Preto. The group, which merges dance rhythms from Africa and Brazil with German electro, was dressed like warriors from a planet straight out of Sun Ra’s imagination,” Chicago Tribune.
“Afrofuturist global bass is how the members of Gato Preto describe their combustible blend of rap, funk and Senegalese drumming. The band is fronted by the explosively charismatic Gata Misteriosa, from Mozambique, who teamed up with the Ghanaian-German producer Lee Bass and Moussa Diallo, an incandescent djembe master from Senegal. Their set had a steamy carnival energy, with the relentless drive of the machine-made pulse amplified by heart-quickening flurries of live drumming,“ New York Times.
