Kalakuta Republic Museum
Bio
Formerly known as Kalakuta Republic, the Kalakuta Republic Museum was home to legendary Nigerian musician, Fela Anikulapo Kuti and his followers. He passed on in 1997. In the early 1970s, the museum was a recording studio and community. Kuti declared Kalakuta Republic a sovereign state and independent of Nigeria due to the corruption of the then military government.
The idea of turning the Kuti’s home into a museum was initially thought of by his children and family who sought the help of the Lagos state government in order to archive it. The project for renovating the home into a museum building was given to Theo Lawnson (an architect responsible for the conversion of the Broad Street prison into a theme park called Freedom Park). The museum consists of five rooms, a guest house, coffee and a souvenir shop. At the entrance of the museum is the grave of the late musician. Visitors hear background music from the late musician's music.
The museum is home to an amazing collection of objects and illustrations that tell the legendary story of Fela Anikulapo Kuti. The museum still has everything from Kuti's bedroom to his underwear.
