Bio
Kwelagobe Sekele is a seasoned music industry veteran with a multifaceted career spanning two decades.
His journey began as a dynamic frontman and leader for the pioneering afro-funk band, Kwani Experience, where he honed his musical instincts and gained invaluable experience through extensive touring of Africa and Europe. This artistic foundation, coupled with his subsequent roles in management, events and promotions, has equipped him with a comprehensive understanding of the music industry ecosystem.
Sekele’s career trajectory has been marked by his ability to seamlessly transition between creative and strategic roles. His tenure at the boutique record label Motif Records, involved artist relations, showcase management, digital community management and being part of the music direction team for the Hansa Festival of Legends while launching emerging artists such as rapper Reason and Canadian/SA singer Zaki Ibrahim. He’s also done work for the Norwegian/South African project, Concerts SA, housed under the now defunct SAMRO Foundation.
Kwela also worked as music manager on more than 500 episodes of the ETV daily soapie Rhythm City, where he also wrote, composed and consulted on the show’s music storyline while overseeing commercial, production and live music. He’s also music supervised for Netflix series Fatal Seduction (2023) and Soon Comes Night (2023), with experience in other independent films. His role as an African consultant and digital media manager for the Canadian label Pirates Blend, highlights his adaptability and proficiency in navigating the evolving, global musical landscape.
As Head of A&R Publishing, Music Supervisor, and Curator for Gallo Music/The Music Arena, Sekele leverages his extensive experience to nurture and promote new legacy talent, while preserving and revitalising our rich musical heritage through creative research, curating and contextualising of Gallo’s extensive catalogue.
Once referred to as a "make-it-happener" by a journalist, Kwela’s passion is evident in his tireless dedication to the industry and sense of duty to positioning our music alongside the world’s greats. His unique blend of artistic vision and strategic acumen has solidified his position as a leading figure in the African music scene.
