Ngwana' Modimo

Ngwana’ Modimo (Enoch Marutha) is a christian musician, producer, composer/songwriter, audio engineer and music educator from Limpopo, South Africa currently studying towards a bachelor of Music degree in Jazz at the University of Witwatersrand and based in Johannesburg.

Prior to enrolling at Wits, Ngwana’ Modimo had the privilege of working with a few artists in Limpopo, mainly doing Gospel studio recording sessions and a live-on-stage recording project in the year 2017 under a prolific record label known as “Ishmo Records and Productions”. He has quite a strong background in Gospel music and thus draws a lot of influence from it together with world music, jazz, Rhythm & blues and other styles. Despite his little and humble bit of experience in the professional music scene, Ngwana’ Modimo, by GOD’s grace, finds himself having achieved amongst many others the following thus far:

* Released a self-produced EP titled Genesis 5:24 in the year 2019. Available on SoundCloud alongside his other releases.

* Shared a stage (as a drummer) with a number of popular musicians in the gospel music space including Sbu Noah, Ntokozo Mbambo, Nqubeko Mbatha, Khaya Sibanyoni, Hle, Gospel Silinda, Puleng March, Siyanqoba Mthethwa, etc.

* Played drums at the now unfortunately closed, Orbit Jazz club in Braamfontein with: Black Thought Music, Joshua Mokoena, Benecia Simelane and Vuma Levin.

* Played drums on an album launch tour with Vuma Levin, Theo Dubuole and Benedikt Reising for the album “In Motion”. The tour included a live radio show on Kaya FM.

* Worked on numerous occasions with the Angus and Godfrey Collective at places including the Rand Club in JHB CBD, Neighbourgoods market, the Wits theatre, etc.

* Had a chance to be featured on a tv talent show called Talent on Track on SABC 3 with Lebohang Lebakeng for their duo band called The Beanies. They had J-Ross as their Mentor/Producer.

* Played drums on Kgafela oa Mogogodi and Prince Lamla’s theatrical adaptation of Ngugi wa Thiong’o’s Devil on the Cross and a few other theatrical pieces with various directors.

* Resident drummer at Change Bible church in Rivonia since 2018.

* Drummer for the Kopano Jazz Collective and Tamara Dey.

* Played for Muhammad Dawjee’s otherness project alongside Vuma Levin, Lwanda Gogwana and Benjamin Jephta at a Concerts SA DMF 2021 concert.

* Played for Francesca Biancoli alongside Vuma Levin, Dalisu Ndlazi and Benjamin Jephta at eDikeni in Sandton and Doppio Zero in Rosebank.

* Got nominated for the INGOMA best gospel producer award 2021.
