Regarded as the ‘Scion of Taarab’, Muharam, great-granddaughter of the Mother of Taarab, Siti Binti Saad, is the vocal driving force of the Siti of Unguja and the DCMA All-Stars.
Following a 5* review, ’Top of the World’ selection and a 3-page feature in Songlines, Siti of Unguja also received coverage in the Critic’s Choice section of the Financial Times and was The Guardian’s ‘Global Album of the Month’. After wooing listeners with her otherworldly prowess on Siti of Unguja, Muharam now takes her Unguja All-Stars on the road. Debuting the show at Sauti Za Busara in 2021 the band played their first European Tour in autumn 2021 and are playing Roskilde and others in summer 2023.
All Stars consists of some of the Zanzibar archipelago’s most revered talent. All the players are leaders in island music from East Africa and teachers at the DCMA. The ‘Stars’ include Quanun of Gora Muhammed, Bass Clarinet of Tamar Osborn and ensemble percussionists led by multi-instrumentalist, Hassan Mahenge and producer Pete Buckenham.
Muharam's golden timbre has been allowed to soar for the world to hear, and her songs carry the legacy, lyricism and odyssey of the 'Mother of Taarab', her great grandmother, Siti Binti Saad.
