Tumi Mogorosi

Born 1987, 2014 SAMA award nominee, Tumi Mogorosi is increasingly building a reputation in the South African jazz scene among the new crop of young jazz musicians and activist of this interesting time. The young artist has refined his brush strokes alongside prominent South African jazz musicians who count – among trumpeter Feya Faku, saxophonist Zim Ngqawana, bassist Herbie Tsoaeli as well as pianist Andile Yenana to name a few.

He recorded his SAMA nominated debut album Project Elo which was released in 2014 and re-released in 2015 by a London based Record company. Project Elo has awarded Tumi Mogorosi a number of prestigious awards including the 2014 Standard Bank Ovation Award, The Mail and Guardian Jazz Album of the year and a SAMA award nomination.

In late 2015, Tumi Mogorosi, recorded a duet album with South African pianist (Pule Pheto) and he also recorded another duo album (Sanctum Sanctorium) with female vocalist Gabi Motuba. Both albums are due for release in late 2016.

Another project which Tumi Mogorosi has under-taken falls under Academic Research. He recently presented a paper on Oral Literature at the University of Beyreuth.  and this paper has consequentially lead him  to present multiply seminars and talks in Europe and South Africa. His passion lives loudly in the dissemination and validation of the African contribution to the world knowledge.

Tumi Mogorosi (Drummer) and Pule Pheto (pianist) have recently recorded a much anticipated album Deliverence. The album was recorded in late 2016 and is due for release this year. Deliverance is a collaborative jazz project that brings together drummer Tumi Mogorosi and pianist Pule Pheto in a harmonious musical exchange. The work takes on an inter-textual turn with the visual art interventions of Mzwandile Buthelezi.
