Call for entries: 2020 Young Performer Awards SA
The National Eisteddfod of South Africa (NEA) is calling on young artists to apply for the 2020 edition of the National Eisteddfod Young Performer Awards.
The call is intended for young performers in music, dance and drama. The competition is also open to all top achievers from the NEA 2019 (all diploma award recipients from the preceding year qualify), as well as other top achievers with similar awards in other local eisteddfods/festivals during 2019.
Entry forms are available via the NEA official website. Applicants may alternatively contact the NEA office at 011 886 6005 (fax: 011 787 3534) or e-mail: info@eisteddfod.co.za. Cash prizes will be presented to the medal and category winners.
Now in its 17th edition, the event will be held at the Roodepoort Theatre. The programme is as follows:
- First round: dance (3 to 5 March), classical & crossover music (24 to 27 February), contemporary music (2 to 6 March), speech and drama (7 to 14 March).
- Quarter final round: dance and music/drama large groups (12 March), classical & crossover music (16 March), contemporary music (17 March), speech & drama (18 to 19 March).
- Semi-final rounds: speech & drama and classical & crossover music (13 May), dance and contemporary music (15 May).
- Final round: 29 May
Requirements
- Young performers from anywhere in the country can enter by submitting a video recorded performance for adjudication in the first round.
- Professional recordings are not essential (cell phone recordings etc are accepted) and the submission of the video can be on CD, memory stick, via WeTransfer, or sharing on YouTube.
- Details of the requirements are available on the NEA webpage. Closing date for all video recorded performances (for the first round only) is 1 March.
“Although there can only be one winner, this is a competition that encourages the development of all participants”, says NEA CEO Francois van den Berg. “The subsequent achievements of many previous winners, top achievers and participants in their careers is proof of this.”
