Ghana: Tic, Sherifa Gunu receive honorary awards
Veteran Ghanaian rapper Tic, singer Sherifa Gunu and broadcaster Okyeame Quophi were among the award recipients at the 2020 Time Ghana Arts and Entertainment Awards (TGAEAs) in Accra on 31 October.
Now in their second year, the awards were established to recognise hardworking Ghanaian showbiz players in music, film and media. The organisers say the initiative aims to foster a healthy relationship among various stakeholders in the country’s entertainment industry.
Sherifa Gunu and Tic were given honorary awards for their impact on Ghanaian music and culture over the past two decades, while Okyeame Quophi, who heads the Emklan Group, was celebrated for his work in music and media production.
Tic thanked the organisers for “recognising my role and contribution in bringing the new age Ghana music this far.” Sherifa also expressed appreciation to the organisers for honouring her efforts in promoting Africa values and tourism.
A founding member of defunct hiplife duo Akyeame alongside Okyeame Kwame, Okyeame Quophi, who is now a presenter on the Accra-based Angel 102.9 FM, said: “To God be the glory. Thanks to Ghana Arts and Entertainment Awards for the honorary award for my contributions in the area of music, television, radio and production in the entertainment industry. The fact that it was unexpected really got me. I am grateful.”
Other recipients on the night include Angel Broadcasting Network executive director Stacy Amoateng, who picked up the award for Woman of the Year, as well as Adom TV’s music reality show Nsroma and UTV’s weekly magazine show United Showbiz.
TGAEAs communications director Edem Mensah-Tsotorme told Music In Africa that Saturday’s ceremony met the expectation of the organisers. He also expressed gratitude to the stakeholders involved in the project.
