The critically acclaimed Nairobi Chamber Chorus will perform a free concert featuring traditional Kenyan folk songs on 12 October at the University of Mississippi, in the US. This is one of the various stops the group will make as part of their tour across the Southeastern United States that starts on 10 October.
The choir is expected to make stops in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi and Florida. As part of the tour the NCC will also perform in Troy University's John M. Long School of Music Band Room on 15 October. This concert will be free and open to the public and will feature music from a variety of African traditions as well as music by American composers such as Eric Whitacre and Z. Randall Stroope.
Founded in October 2005 the Nairobi Chamber Chorus is made up of 23 young singers. The group has won praises from its audiences for their electrifying performances of spirituals and Kenyan music. In 2012 they performed at the Queens Diamond Jubilee pageant in Berkshire, UK.
Since its inception more than 70 young people have sung with the Chorus and are now leading musicians in Kenya and beyond. The Nairobi Chamber Chorus' mission is to enable young Kenyans to participate in a high quality musical forum from which to build careers and expand knowledge of the arts. Members are drawn from universities and institutions in Nairobi, and donate their time and resources to meet and make music.
