South Africa's Ray Phiri returns to Bassline
Phiri will have a one night performance at an event where a host of surprising musical collaborations is expected. The venue is a popular spot where current legends meet future ones. Already singer Simphiwe Dana performed at the event on 6 August to celebrate Women’s Month.
Phiri will share the stage with new music outfit Thee Legacy, an acapella unit consisting of grandsons of members of the revered Ladysmith Black Mambazo. The group has performed at major festivals such as the Africa Day Concert and is expected to present an eclectic performance.
Undoubtedly one of the most talented jazz crooners in the country, Ray owns an extraordinary catalogue of songs stretching over almost five decades. And with September being Heritage Month and Bassline’s 22nd birthday, a performance by the A Lifetime hit maker is fitting.
The show’s four segments will each reflect five year periods beginning in 1994 with songs ranging from ‘Stimela’, to Phiri's solo-work, ‘Songbook’. As such, Kaya FM fans will experience a unique opportunity to interact with the legend as he reflects on over two decades of life as an artist.
Founded in 1994, Bassline is a live music venue in Newtown, Johannesburg that hosts a variety of gigs, events, comedy shows and concerts. Many of Africa's most famous stars and world music icons have played on the Bassline stage. Tickets to 'Live @ The Bassline' can be bought at Webtickets for R180 ($13) or R200 ($14) at the door.
