Gambia to host Musa Ngum tribute concert
A tribute concert dedicated to the late Musa Afia Ngum will take place on 15 October at the Alliance Française offices in Banjul.
The event will attract Gambian artists including Sambou Suso, Tatadingding, Cess Ngum, T. Smallz, ENC, Jizzle, Prince Melo, Kerr Gi Family, Musa Ngum Jr, Silky Criss, Tapha artist, Mbye Gaye, Faya Ngum, Mam Sheikh Ngum, Humanity Starz, Omid Wisdom and Magnificent Joe. These artists will be backed by Kebba Taylor and Friends.
Ngum died while on a tour in Senegal, where he performed alongside his son, the artist popularly known as Jollofman, and Omar Pene on 10 October last year. He was rushed to to a hospital, and later pronounced dead.
Ngum was laid to rest on 12 October 2015, with the Musicians Union of The Gambia and the Collecting Society of The Gambia condoling with his family.
Shortly after the demise of the veteran musician, Gambians, both home and abroad, setup ‘The Musa Ngum Tribute Committee’ to help sustain his legacy and raise funds to support his family.
The project started with the establishment of a Gofundme account to raise funds for the family followed by the production of two tribute songs. One of which was released in February; the other will be released the night of the tribute concert.
The committee raised D35,000 ($820) through the Gofundme account from individual donations, announcing that the final phase of the project will be the forthcoming tribute scheduled to hold around the first anniversary of the singer’s death.
Speaking to the media, the committee expressed gratitude to everyone who contributed towards the success of the project, particularly those who contributed financially and the musicians who contributed to the recording of tribute songs to Ngum.
