Afropolitan Vibes: Adekunle Gold, Cynthia Morgan, Tomi Thomas for anniversary
Monthly concert Afropolitan Vibes will be celebrating its fourth anniversary on 17 March at its usual Freedom Park venue in Lagos, Nigeria.
The concert series, as co-produced by Abby Ogunsanya and Ade Bantu, will have as guests three solo artists: Cynthia Morgan, Adekunle Gold and Tomi Thomas. The Obadikah Brass Band completes the line-up.
Since the concert series returned in February, after a January hiatus, the invited guests have been almost entirely young artists, different from the generational mix of many editions in the past. The year’s first edition saw Ice Prince, Jaywon and Lindsey Abudei headline the concert in February. In the same spirit, the March lineup, Morgan, Gold and Thomas, are all members of the current generation of musicians.
In four years, the Afropolitan Vibes concert has become an anticipated event in the Lagos live music scene, with faithful attendees talking about the event on social media as the date approaches.
Adekunle Gold released his debut album, Gold, to acclaim last year. The modern highlife artist, who is signed to Olamide’s YBNL label, won the 2015 Headies award for Best Alternative Song. He was also named Revelation of Africa at the 2015 All Africa Music Awards.
Dancehall artist Cynthia Morgan won the Best Reggae Single award at the 2015 Headies, and is said to be working on a debut album.
Last year, Tomi Thomas released the Black Couch EP online; it follows his 2014 EP, Patience. He performed at the Afropolitan Vibes festival at the end of the year.
