Call for applications: Radio Art Residency in Germany
Applications are ongoing for the second Radio Art Residency programme in Weimar, Germany.
The residency is a joint project by Goethe-Institut and Experimental Radio at Bauhaus University Weimar in cooperation with the University of Music Franz Liszt Weimar and other local cultural organisations. It offers a three-month residency twice a year for artists from non-German speaking countries.
The fellowship aims to promote independent and open-ended artistic work and support the realisation of new artworks. It also seeks to encourage the exploration of radio as an instrument of communication and possibly even questioning what can be constituted as language by radio.
Over 450 applications from more than 60 countries were received in the first open call in January 2021. The proposed projects included podcasts, radio compositions and plays, sound installations and live performances using archival or newly created material. Zimbabwean interdisciplinary artist Masimba Hwati was selected by the jury for the residency between 1 April and 30 June.
The fellowship is curatorially supervised and technically supported by Experimental Radio at Bauhaus University Weimar.
During their three-month stay, fellows will:
- Explore the boundaries of sound and radio art and transcend them in interdisciplinary constellations.
- Be inspired by intercultural dialogue with artists, scholars and students at Experimental Radio at Bauhaus University Weimar and the University of Music Franz Liszt, as well as by the culture and classics city of Weimar.
- Get the opportunity to have a closer look at and to network with contemporary art in Germany and, in particular, international sound and radio art.
Eligibility
Interested applicants should note the following:
- The programme is for artists working in acoustic and time-based arts (radio, performance and sound artists).
- Applications are open to artists from non-German speaking countries without residence in Germany.
- Although experience in radio production is not necessarily required, an interest in engaging with the medium and using radio for the applicant’s work is expected.
Requirements
- A CV that should contain full contact details, educational background and an overview of the applicant’s artistic career to date (max two pages).
- Letter of motivation that highlights what motivates the applicant to participate in the residency programme (max two pages).
- A brief portfolio that provides insights into their previous artistic work.
Interested applicants should send the above documents in a single PDF document to eleftherios.krysalis@uni-weimar.de with ‘Radio Art Residency’ in the subject line. Audio files may be sent via email or uploaded to relevant digital platforms.
The application deadline is 30 June at 11.59 CAT.
