Call for applications: Artist residency in Germany
The Centre for the Less Good Idea in Johannesburg and the Leipzig International Art Programme (LIA) are calling on artists living in South Africa to submit applications for a three-month residence programme in Leipzig, Germany.
The call is designed for artists who are working across all disciplines, but particularly in the digital realm of sound art, video, performance and media art.
The LIA residence programme will be conducted in three phases: 1 February to 1 May 2022 (four studios), 1 August to 31 October 2022 (two studios) and 1 November 2022 to 31 January 2023 (three studios).
Successful applicants will benefit from the following:
- LIA will offer a three-month residency to nine selected artists.
- An 80m2 furnished studio to live and work in.
- A monthly fellowship of €800 (about $950). The monthly fellowship grant has to be offset against receipts and is allocated as follows: €400 fixed monthly for food, €200 fixed monthly for local travel and once off for health and travel insurance, and €200 fixed monthly for material costs.
- One international return flight ticket at a maximum of €800.
- Within the residency, artists are required to participate in an etching workshop paid for by LIA.
Requirements
- Artists need to live and work primarily in South Africa but need not to be South African citizens.
- The artist’s overall practice should involve a digital technique such as sound, electronics, photography, filmmaking or new media.
- Applicants should send a short text motivation of no more than 500 words in a PDF file. The file needs to include six images of their work and a short CV with relevant works of their application and their intention. Artists should cite their website if there is one.
- It is essential that the subject line of the applicant’s email application states: ‘African Leipzig Application | South Africa’.

Note: Applicants will receive an email reply within a week. Artists should send an original dated application if they do not receive a confirmation.
The application deadline is 23 August and applicants will be notified by mid-October.
