THUMANE
Bio
Thumane is a Sesotho Afrojazz band established in 2018 at Boinyatso, Roma Lesotho. It is under the leadership of Mohlali Mahloane, also known as Ntota Bosesanyane, the main vocalist of the band. The band is composed of backing vocalists and a variety of session musicians who play instruments from Sekhankula, Marimba, Lesiba, Bass guitar, acoustic guitar, keyboards, and drums.
Thumane takes pride in that it incorporates African indigenous musical instruments like Lesiba, which is a wind instrument that resembles a flute but has no holes, just a single string that stretches along the length of the instrument; Sekhankula, also called ‘Mamokhorong, which resembles a harp but has only one string that is played with a bow like a violin. Their sound also boasts ingenious use of other indigenous musical instruments like the bongo, accordion, and even marimba depending on the kind of songs being performed. Ntota Bosesanyane composes the music with the help of various session musicians and writes songs determined to inspire, stimulate and inculcate within their audience, the spirit of the Basotho culture: a spirit of resilience, peace in relation to self and with the others, unity and a broader sense of deep cultural consciousness.
