Alliance Francaise Lagos to celebrate World Music Day with free concerts
The Alliance Francaise Lagos will mark World Music Day with a series of events.
Known as Fête de la Musique in France, World Music Day began in 1981 as an idea by French minister of culture Jack Lang. The first edition took place the following year on 21 June, the start of summer.
Once a year since, professional and amateur musicians showcase their work to a festive audience. In France, bars, restaurants, cafes, parks and other venues host free events commemorating music as art and entertainment.
The event has become a global celebration with countries around the world celebrating music with free events across various cities. Alliance Francaise Lagos seeks to continue this tradition, and to this end the institution has invited its students and the public to its Yaba offices on 21 June for a private live performance by and an interactive question session with Nigerian artist Falana from 2pm to 3.30pm.
The following day, Thursday 22 June, working with Institut Français Nigeria, the African Artist’s Foundation and Showgear, Alliance Française will host another free concert with French rapper Leeroy, a week after he appeared on the Afropolitan Vibes stage. French DJ Aleqs Notal and Nigerian percussionist Wura Samba complete the line-up. This second concert will take place at the African Artists’ Foundation in Victoria Island at 7pm.
