Kenya: KAMP appoints Maurice Okoth as new CEO
The Kenya Association of Music Producers (KAMP) has appointed Maurice Okoth as new chief executive officer.
In an announcement issued through its quarterly newsletter, KAMP chairperson Antony Murimi said the appointment of Okoth was made in a bid to improve the operations at the organisation representing the rights and interests of producers of sound recordings in Kenya.
“We know that under his leadership KAMP will continue its strong record of progress,” Murimi said. "Maurice [Okoth], a specialist in intellectual property, is an experienced executive with a career spanning over 20 years.”
In his new role, Okoth will be in charge of administering copyright rights on behalf of members as well as promoting the interests of producers of sound recordings and audio-visual works through collection of licence fees and distribution of royalties.
Okoth thanked the board for the appointment, promising to continue charting new paths to success. He said: “This is a new beginning. I must say I'm glad to be serving in a capacity that I'm extremely passionate about. Together, we'll soar to greater heights.”
He assumes office with immediate effect replacing his predecessor Mbugua Njoroge who has been serving as the CEO since 21 July 2021.
Okoth is a well-known figure in the Kenyan creative enterprise space having been actively involved in seeking and nurturing talent through the Talanta Mtaani initiative.
Previously he served as the CEO of the Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) before he was suspended on 7 March 2016 over allegations of impropriety. He was later cleared of all the charges by a Nairobi court.
Meanwhile, KAMP has announced that the elections of directors will take place during a special annual general meeting to be held on 25 November 2022.
Aspiring candidates can access the nomination forms from KAMP’s website here. Duly filled and signed nomination forms must be received at the KAMP offices in Nairobi on or before 8 November 2022.
