Call for participation: Mapping live event production services in SA
The South African Cultural Observatory (SACO) is inviting local independent contractors, business owners and business managers to participate in a survey that seeks to gather data on the performance of live event technical and production services in South Africa.
Live event technical and production services highlight a particular sector within the cultural and creative industry (CCI). It is aimed at individuals and businesses that are supporting and enabling a broad range of production including music, performing arts, festivals and other events. This is an important, but often overlooked economic sub-sector within the CCIs.
The purpose of this survey is to gather better quality data about the sector to make recommendations to support economic opportunities.
The survey is intended to be completed by independent contractors, business owners and business managers providing live events technical and production services.
What participants need to know
- The survey is voluntary and anonymous – the information provided will not be linked to participants or their firm and conforms to South African privacy laws.
- The results will be made available to the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, which funds the Cultural Observatory, and published in a report on the SACO website.
- Performance and celebration: Performing arts, music and festivals.
- All this information will be protected under POP| Act (2013) and disaggregated from dataset and results.

About SACO
Initiated by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture through the Mzansi Golden Economy Strategy (2011), SACO is a statistical and socioeconomic research project launched in 2014 that examines South Africa’s CCIs, and arts, culture and heritage sectors. It uses use a range of innovative statistical methodologies, audits and research tools to understand the creative economy. Its main purpose is the development of a comprehensive cultural information system that continuously captures cultural data and monitors and evaluates government initiatives in the ACH sectors and CCIs.
