SA: The Playhouse Company announces Ingoma Competition winners
The Playhouse Company, an agency of the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, has announced the recipients of the Ingoma Competition, which was held at Curries Fountain Sports Development Centre in Durban, South Africa, at the weekend.
The competition was presented in accordance with The Playhouse Company’s mandate to produce diversely equitable live productions in the fields of music, drama and dance throughout KwaZulu-Natal.
The event showcased 42 Zulu dance groups, competing for coveted prizes in seven categories of traditional dance styles: Isigekle, uShameni, Ingoma Yezinsizwa, Ingoma Yezintombi, Ingoma Sikhuze, Indlamu and Umzansi.
“We salute the dancers for their dedication to honour this tradition by putting in untold hours of practice,” The Playhouse Company chief executive and artistic director Linda Bukhosini said. “This showed throughout the day, as they demonstrated precision and passion in carrying out their routines.”
