Meri Kanu & the Great River
Bio
Multi-instrumentalist Meri Kanu first burst onto the South African music scene as a community radio presenter, initially known as Meri Kè and later as Meri Kenaz, in the mid-2000s. During this time, she began touring and performing at major festivals.
“Blindingly fascinating singer-songwriter… well-constructed songs and strong dramatic capacity…”
– Gisele Turner (Tonight.co.za)
“Meri Kè's voice comes close to capturing the passion and intensity of human nature. The power and passion of her playing do true justice to the incredible quality of her voice.”
– Isabel Rawlins (CUE National Arts Festival of Grahamstown)
Her name, Meri, means "Joyous Ocean," while Ké / Kenaz / Kanu refers to "Fire" and "Knowledge." The ‘rune’ symbolizes new beginnings in every end.
Now, through Meri Kanu & the Great River, she collaborates with other artists to create music and techniques that use sound for healing, transformation, and revitalizing flow.
The Great River serves as an open vehicle for collaboration, channeling the Light of Divine Inspiration and celebrating the embodiment of Life-force Energy.
