Tomi Owó releases video for fan favourite Versus
Soul singer-songwriter Tomi Owó has released a music video for 'Versus'.
The song, which was produced by Odunsi the Engine and IBK Owolabi, was the fifth song off Pieces, a collection of a one-song-a-month project embarked on by the artist two years ago. Following its release, 'Versus' became an instant fan favourite.
"So many people who have listened to 'Versus' have asked about a music video," the artist tweeted recently. "Glad it's finally happened."
According to an official statement by the artist, the video, directed by the singer's brother, Seun Owolabi, is significantly symbolic.
It “brings together reflective moments, silhouettes and subtle movements and dances, to convey the vulnerability and strength experienced in love. The dim lights consistent throughout the video curiously represent an ideal that in love, we can still find each other even through the darkness.”
Speaking about the unusual title for a love song, Owó told Music In Africa that she tends "to be a bit mysterious with my songwriting and titling and I chose the title to pique the interest of listeners in the angle of love I explore in the song. 'Versus' represents a tussle between two people."
Before the release of the official video, the song had been used for the music-themed Nollywood picture Lara and the Beat.
“The director of the film, Tosin Coker, has a great ear for music,” Owó said. “He discovered my music and communicated his interest in infusing a couple of my songs, including 'Versus', into his picture.”
Owó is currently at work on her debut album. “It's been a wonderful process creating all the music and I look forward to sharing it with the world,” she said.
