Call for applications: Sauti Academy workshop in Mombasa
Kenyan artist development programme Sauti Academy will hold a singing workshop at Swahilipot Hub in Mombasa from 10 to 14 September 2018.
Sauti Academy was launched in 2010 and has grown into a significant resource for the Kenyan music industry. In the past 10 years, the academy has trained more than 1 000 singers, some of whom are currently voice coaches at the school. The academy's alumni include Sauti Sol, H_art the Band, Willy Paul, Phy, Kaskazini and Bahati.
The Mombasa workshop, titled Paza Sauti za Pwani, will coast 4 000 Kenyan shillings ($40) and cover areas such as voice technique, music interpretation and performance. A concert will be held on 14 September where participants will get implement their newly acquired knowledge.
“A few weeks ago we did an impromptu meeting with Mombasa-based musicians and they asked us if we could organise a programme for them," Sauti Academy founder Natalie Lukkenaer told Music In Africa. "Paza Sauti za Pwani is our first official workshop in Mombasa.
“It is our experience that many stars in Kenya don’t have voice training, but when we give them practical tips it has an immediate effect. Our programmes are not about grading but giving artists the tools they can use to improve their performance. We hold regular concerts for our students so they can use what they learn in class.”
“Music education in Mombasa consist of a few private tutors so there is an enormous need for artist development. We look forward to extending our programme to the coast and in the long run opening a branch there.”
The workshop will run from 10am to 4pm daily and applicants are advised to book early, as there are only 30 slots available. Bookings are on a first-come, first-served basis.
In addition, talented singers from underprivileged backgrounds will be given an opportunity to secure a scholarship at the academy.
