SA: Joburg to host Heroines of Jazz Live event on 27 April
The Heroines of Jazz Live event will be held at the Shades of Summer Boutique Hotel in Centurion, South Africa, on 27 April.
- Gabi Motuba is among the artists who will perform at the event.
The event will coincide with Freedom Day in South Africa and leading into International Jazz Day on 30 April. It seeks to reinforce jazz’s role in artistic expression and cultural reflection, to celebrate freedom, creativity, and the genre’s legacy as a unifying force across generations and borders.
Artists who will perform at the event include Siya Makuzeni, Gabi Motuba and Iphupho L’ka Biko Big Band. They will be joined by the following DJs: Ms Kopano Pule, Mamello Pule, Ms Elisa the Selector, and Boitumelo Pitso.
Adding a lyrical and reflective layer to the event, celebrated poet and cultural activist Mo’Afrika wa Mokgathi will guide the event through the intersection of jazz, identity, and liberation.
“This year’s Heroines of Jazz is more than just a concert, it is a movement, a statement, and a reaffirmation of jazz’s evolving legacy in South Africa,” the organisers said. “Attendees can expect an evening of unparalleled artistry, innovation, and musical storytelling that will resonate long after the final note is played.”
Siya Makuzeni is a powerful trombonist, vocalist, and composer renowned for her genre-defying approach to jazz. Her fearless fusion of traditional African sounds with modern jazz, which they said continued to captivate audiences worldwide. Meanwhile, Gabi Motuba is an accomplished vocalist and composer known for her deeply emotive performances and ability to weave rich narratives through her music. In addition, the Iphupho L’ka Biko Big Band is expected to bring a powerful and thought-provoking performance to the stage, blending jazz with African spirituality and political consciousness.
