The Color Purple musical returns to Joburg Theatre in 2020

The Color Purple, a musical based on Alice Walker's 1982 novel of the same name, returns at the Joburg Theatre in South Africa from 2 to 12 April 2020 before touring Europe and Asia.

The lyrics of the musical were composed by US songwriters Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray. The first major international staging of The Color Purple musical since the Broadway revival, opened in Johannesburg on 28 January last year.

“This is a very special occasion for us at Joburg Theatre and for the City of Johannesburg itself,” Joburg City Theatres CEO Xoliswa Nduneni-Ngema said. “The all-South African creative team and cast will be flying the flag for Johannesburg when they take this glorious production internationally in 2020.

“There have been numerous requests from our patrons for a return season on The Mandela stage following the two sold-out seasons in 2018. We are delighted to present this uplifting and empowering musical once again as a ‘bon voyage’ treat before it travels.”
