Hawas Band
Bio
Hawas is an independent Egyptian band that formed in Cairo in 2014. Their genre can be described as Alternative Arabic Funk; it fuses elements of jazz, funk, rock folk, and reggae, reworked with instruments including the Oud, percussions and keyboards.
The band consists of eight musicians, five of which are former members of Maghna Khan band: Mahmoud ElKhateeb (Lead Vocal), Marwan Fawzi (Accordion), Amir Rasmy (Keyboards), Hisham Anas (Oud), Al-Moataz Bellah Moussa (Lead Guitar), Mahmoud Waly (Bass Guitar), Ahmed Tito (Drums) and Bouda Abu El Yazeed (Percussions).
Hawas’ openness comes from, amongst other things, the high diversity of its members, from a wide spectrum of subcultures, generations and backgrounds – ranging from 40-year-old university doctor and accordion player Marwan Fawzy to 19-year-old percussionist Bouda Abdul Yazeed.
Their lyrics explpre the challenges of everyday life, love, pain, self-exploration, reminiscing memories – sentiments that are naturally universal and transgenerational, making for a borderless statement about existence.
Besides many singles Hawas has released two EPs in 2015 titled “Hawas” and “Like Winter”. “Batal Khareq›› their first LP which consists of 9 songs, 3 of them has been released and the rest will be released in June and September 2020.
