Mpho, born on October 4th, 1986, in vibrant township Soshanguve, Pretoria is a captivating Afro Soul artist whose music resonates with the depths of the soul. Mpho's journey into the world of music began at a young age, where she found solace and expression through the power of song. Her Stage Name is KeMpho- a name that fittingly translates to “am a Gift’. KeMpho’s musical journey began like many great artists, rooted in the soulful melodies of church choirs. From a young age, her powerful voice resonated with those around Her, setting the stage for what would become a promising career. By 2004, she was already making waves in the competition music world, earning the runner-up position in the prestigious Star Forte competition. This achievement marked the beginning of her ascent in the industry, hinting at the remarkable potential she possessed.
Drawing inspiration from her South African roots, KeMpho infuses traditional rhythms with modern soulful melodies, creating a unique sound that speaks to the hearts of her listeners. Her soul-stirring vocals and heartfelt lyrics transport audiences to a place of reflection and connection, evoking emotions that linger long after the music fades
KeMpho released her two debut singles titled Family and Reitumetse, which is dedicated to her daughter Reitumetse. The two songs were produced by JRoss from JrossBeats who is an award-winning music producer. Her latest EP was Arranged by Keakantse from Kea Studios and final mixes and arrangements were done by Jross. Her New EP ‘Echoes of the soul’ has four tracks, “Maphupho” (Dreams): A euphonic exploration of love’s aspirations. “Legae” (Home): A melodic tribute to the comfort of true connection,“Ntyatyambo” (Flower): A haunting ballad of absence and longing, “Reitumetse (Remix)”: A fresh interpretation of her breakthrough hit.
Each track is a carefully crafted narrative, drawing from Mpho’s personal experiences and universal themes. Mpho’s artistic vision transcends demographics, aiming to create a musical experience that resonates across generations.
KeMpho mentions that she loves singing about Family as it is the closest thing to her heart, hence Her two recorded first songs are all about her Family. The new EP is titled Ntyatyanbo, a Xhosa word meaning flower, which is a song dedicated to Her Grand Mother. The New EP is the continuation of Her first two singles, which were all about love and Family. All the new tracks are in different languages, Xhosa, Zulu, Setswana and English.
Kempho’s music is classified loosely as “Afro-soul” or Afro-Pop and she sings in her native language Sesotho, isiZulu, Setswana, Xhosa as well as in English. Her music has been described as a mixture of styles popularized by the Legendary Zonke Dikana and Kelly Khumalo.
